Requiem A

Dresden-based composer and producer Sven Helbig created Requiem A to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, honoring the victims of war and sending a profound plea for peace. The 'A' in the title stands for 'beginning' (German: Anfang) and uses poetic images to call for reconciliation and a new beginning. “Departure” (German: Aufbruch), ‘ashes’ (German: Asche)  and ‘breathing’ (German: Atmen)  are key words in the texts, which seek a way out of mourning and into life.
The world premiere will take place on February 9, 2025, in Dresden’s Kreuzkirche, performed by the Dresden Kreuzchor, the Saxon State Orchestra, and celebrated bass-baritone René Pape. The recording will be released by Deutsche Grammophon on May 9, 2025. This poignant work seeks to serve as a universal message of remembrance, reconciliation, and cultural exchange.
